Alzheimer’s Australia Vic to Speak at EGHS

At the East Grampians Health Service Aged Care Auxiliary’s Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday 21st July, the Auxiliary invited Mary Slater to speak about Alzheimer’s Australia Vic and her role in Ballarat as a Dementia Consultant.

President of the EGHS Aged Care Auxiliary Mrs. Richardson said “We particularly wanted Mrs. Slater to speak at the meeting because East Grampians Health Service is looking to implement the Specialized Montessori Model of Care early next year.” Alzheimer’s Australia Dementia Vic Consultant Mrs. Slater said she is happy to speak about the focus of her work in community services and opportunities for working towards dementia friendly communities which are a particular focus for this year’s Dementia Awareness Month in September. Mary will provide information about her current role at Alzheimer’s Australia Vic.

Mrs. Slater said “I usually speak to community groups to highlight the issues associated with good brain health and deliver a risk reduction program called Your Brain Matters.” We work with the goals that people themselves identify. I meet with people in their homes, work with people in groups to provide early intervention programs, and speak to community groups to raise community awareness and understanding.”

Mrs. Richardson says she is particularly interested to learn more about “brain health” and its effect on our lives. Mrs. Richardson is looking to encourage more volunteers to the assist the Aged Care Auxiliary at East Grampians Health Service.

The demand for one on one assistance will increase significantly as the Montessori program is rolled out in 2016. Mrs. Richardson believes volunteering in Aged Care is very rewarding and is a great way to help out in the community.
