A new opportunity exists for a Head of Department – Obstetrics to join our Medical Services Department. This vacancy is for a part time position 8 hours per week.

Job Tasks and Responsibilities

This role provides essential leadership and clinical oversight to ensure the sustained excellence of obstetric services at East Grampians Health Service (EGHS). By offering expert mentoring and advice to General Practitioner Obstetricians, the position plays a key role in maintaining a robust Level 3 Maternity and Level 2 Newborn capability.

Responsibilities include active participation in clinical governance, the development of safe delivery protocols, and the execution of clinical audits to drive performance improvements. Furthermore, the role acts as a vital bridge for regional collaboration, leading partnerships with Grampians Health Ballarat and supporting the Grampians Rural Generalist model to ensure long-term service sustainability.

The role also oversees comprehensive education programs for both doctors and midwives, including onsite observations and workshops. By contributing to the credentialing and appointment process, the position ensures high standards of care across the medical team. Serving as a primary liaison between clinical staff and the executive leadership—including the Director of Medical Services and the CEO—this role is central to strategic service planning and the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care.

Skills and Experience

The successful application must hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) and maintain current specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

The ideal applicant will possess extensive clinical experience and hold an appointment in Obstetrics at Grampians Health, including active participation in the on-call roster. Beyond these core qualifications, candidates must demonstrate a deep familiarity with modern obstetric and gynaecological practices, alongside a steadfast commitment to ongoing clinical education. Furthermore, the role requires highly effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate successfully across the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Appointment is subject to immunisation clearance and current and satisfactory Employment Checks (Police and Working With Children Checks and NDIS Worker Screening Check).
