A Registered Undergraduate Student of Nursing (RUSON) is a person currently enrolled at a university to undertake nursing study, who is registered with AHPRA as a student nurse, and who at commencement, has successfully completed not less than 12 months of the Bachelor of Nursing Degree.

East Grampians Health Service has a 29-bed inpatient unit offering a wide range of clinical services located at the main Ararat campus. The inpatient unit accommodates medical, surgical, paediatric, perioperative, midwifery and palliative care patients. Developing health service partnerships, EGHS aims to service the health care needs of patients within the community as well as neighbouring towns. EGHS offers a 24-hour urgent care centre which is supported by our local GP clinic. Other acute services provided include an on-site pathology laboratory and medical imaging services.

About The Role

Registered Undergraduate Students of Nursing (RUSON)s are employed under the Nurses and Midwives (Victorian Public Sector) Enterprise Agreement 2024-2028 (Clause 106).

RUSONs work under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse.

RUSONs work within a core duties and exclusion list, (this is very different in scope to a nursing student placement) and the RUSON works above Safe Patient Care ratios.

Based at East Grampians Health Service (EGHS) in Ararat the RUSON is employed on a fixed term basis to a maximum of 24 hours per week. Shifts required to be worked are AM and PM, Monday to Sunday as rostered, taking study and clinical placement obligations into account.

RUSON employment ceases upon registration as a Registered Nurse, or if the student withdraws, defers, or fails their undergraduate degree.

The role of the RUSON:

  • Gives additional clinical exposure in acute environments.
  • Creates an additional career pathway for undergraduate nurses
  • Enables fundamental skill development and earlier transition into healthcare teams
  • RUSON period of service continues into the Transition Year (pending successful selection)
  • Paid position
  • Gives additional clinical exposure in acute environments.

Appointment is subject to immunisation clearance and current and satisfactory Employment Checks (Police and Working With Children Checks and NDIS Worker Screening Check).
