Shorn, shaved and sprayed for Leukaemia research

There was much laughter at Willaura Healthcare as participants in ‘Shave for a Cure’ fronted up to have their hair lopped, shorn and sprayed.

It was all for a good cause, and together the crew raised over $3,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Gary Cunningham, Julie Chick and Brian Kelly had their long locks significantly reduced, while Olivia Gration, Jess Peters, and Kathy Young ended up with rainbow coloured hair. In an impromptu show of solidarity, resident Jack Steyaert also ended up with rainbow hair.

Hairdresser Sue Robinson came armed with scissors and shavers, and it wasn’t long before she had piles of hair on the floor and empty spray cans around her.

“It’s a great cause to be associated with, and it makes it all the more special since my Mum’s a resident. Gary Cunningham is a family friend, and everyone here calls her ‘Gran’,” Sue said.

Event co-ordinator and ‘Team Leader’, Michelle Maslin commended the volunteers, and laughingly said they did a great job getting their hair cut just before winter.

Willaura Healthcare Manager Chris McArthur thanked the audience for coming, and said of all the staff involved, “I couldn’t be prouder”.

She also thanked local businesses for their contributions to the raffle, winners of which included Noel Parker, Willow Parker, Jane Vallance, Annika McArthur, Anna Overlack and Tammy Day.
