Ararat & District Hospital – 150 Years Celebration & Reunion
When: 6th March - 8th March 2010
In March 2010 East Grampians Health Service will celebrate 150 years on the Ararat Hospital site - a significant milestone of a long remarkable history of providing quality care to the Ararat and District community.
It will be a time to reflect, to celebrate and importantly an opportunity for all those associated with providing health care over many, many years to come together on the long weekend of 6th, 7th and 8th March.
EGHS invites all past & present staff and the Community to join us to celebrate this milestone.
The three day (Labour Day Long Weekend) celebration is an opportunity to reflect on a long remarkable history and a chance for those associated with the Ararat and Willaura hospitals over many years to come together with the Ararat and District community. It is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the strong links forged during this time.
Over the years, dedicated Doctors, Nurses and Ancillary Staff have given outstanding service, and it is hoped many who have moved on will return for the celebrations.
Available for downloading below is the 150th Brochure which Our 150 Years Celebration Organising Committee has compiled. The Committee is made up of current staff, ex Nurses, Ararat Rural City and Community Representatives. This brochure outlines the program of events and also includes a registration and merchandise order form.
Of much interest will be the Reunion Dinner for ex Staff and current Staff on the Saturday evening and with limited seating available at the Ararat Performing Arts Centre, it is recommended that you register early for this event.
We have endeavoured to locate as many ex staff as possible, but may have missed some, so please pass on this information to any you keep in contact with.
If you:
- require further information on any of the events planned to celebrate this significant milestone
- are able to assist us with names of ex-staff
- have old photos and historial memorabilia which can be copied or reproduced for the Historial Exhibition
Please phone Carmel on 03 5352 9318.
On behalf of East Grampians Health Service Board of Management and Staff we look forward to you joining us for our 150 Years Celebration.

Our History:

1858:
A committee is formed to collect funds to build a place of refuge for the sick and needy on a site called 'Slaughter Yard Hill' and on 22nd August 1859 Frederick Lowe laid the foundation stone of a thirty- bed hospital. At a public meeting held on February 18, 1860 with President Fred Lowe, Esq, C.M.C. in the chair, the rules of the Ararat Hospital were established.
1886: Pyrenees House is built as a general hospital and operates in this role until 1937 when it was converted to a nurses home. In 1953 it became the geriatric ward (renamed John Pickford Geriatric Centre) until 1986. From 1988 this historic build has been used as adminstration offices and conference centre and is still a prominant part of the health service today.

1937: A three storey hospital is built and this building still forms part of the new Ararat Hospital which was officially opened in May 2005.
1995:
East Grampians Health Service is incorporated with the amalgamation of the Ararat and District Hospital, Willaura and the then John Pickford Geriatric Centre.
2005:
Official Opening of the $8.95 millon Ararat Hospital development by the Premier of Victoria, Hon Steve Bracks MP. This new facility was made possible by a State Government Grant and the outstanding community donation of $1.85 million.
